EMBO | FEBS Lecture Courses

Application

About

The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS) will annually support three to five Joint Lecture Courses on relevant, timely scientific topics in biochemistry, molecular biology and related areas such as systems biology.

The Joint EMBO/FEBS Lecture Courses intend to provide students and postdoctoral fellows with opportunities for career development and mentoring by meeting experts in their fields.

Courses can be organized in any of the EMBC Member States or any country of a FEBS constituent society .

Funding

The maximum funding provided by EMBO and FEBS is 40,000 euro.

THE APPLICATION PROCESS IS HANDLED VIA THE FEBS WEBSITE.

How to apply

- Register as a user on the FEBS website

- Download the FEBS/EMBO Application & Reporting Forms Package in the download area (found under the "Courses" menu option)

- Complete the FEBS/EMBO application form

- Prepare a CV in pdf (maximum 3 pages)

- Login at the FEBS website

- Go to ONLINE SUBMISSION - New Application

- Complete the requested fields and upload the application form in both word and pdf format as well as the CV in pdf at the same time - press the submit button

- An automatic confirmation of the successful submission with the course number will be e-mailed to the applicant.

Annual application deadlines: 1 March and 1 August annually for meetings planned for the following year.

Applications are reviewed by both the EMBO Course Committee and FEBS Advanced Courses Committee. All applications are treated in confidence and only publicized following acceptance of the funding conditions by the organizer. All correspondence concerning applications should be conducted with the EMBO office (courses_workshops @ embo.org). Any attempts to influence the decision process by contacting individual members of the committee will result in disqualification of the application.

Format

Since the focus is on training, lecturers should deliver introductory lectures followed by state-of-the-art scientific talks. Joint lecture courses may host a limited number of lecturers (18-24), who should strongly interact with students (up to 120) in poster sessions, oral presentations, round-table discussions and tutorials. An adequate course programme should be developed for a period of usually five to seven working days.

Participants

Organizers are encouraged to promote a balanced male/female representation when selecting participants.

Promotion & Payment

Advertisement

After approval, Joint EMBO/FEBS Lecture Courses will be advertised through the annual EMBO & FEBS Course Posters and announced in The EMBO Journal, EMBO reports, EMBOencounters, the FEBS Journal, FEBS Letters, the FEBS e-newsletter, in Nature Events and through the EMBO and FEBS websites. All organizers are also encouraged to advertise their courses by other means.

Online HelpDesk

The EMBO Online HelpDesk will organize the setup of all websites (including online registration) and design meeting posters. Full details will be supplied to organizers shortly after funding has been confirmed to organizers.

Other Funds

EMBO may provide additional support to cover travel (economy), accommodation and subsistence costs for additional lecturers: one EMBO Plenary Lecture, one EMBO Young Investigator Lecture, one Science & Society Lecture and one Women in Science Lecture, under the following conditions:

1. Names of the lecturers must be specified in the application form.

2. Lecturers must fulfill EMBO's eligibility criteria (see below).

3. EMBO's request forms must be completed for each lecture and sent to the email addresses given in each form, after the joint EMBO/FEBS Lecture Course has been accepted for funding.

4. Expenses will be reimbursed directly to the lecturers by the EMBO office.

5. The following costs will not be covered: stipend for the speaker, registration fee, costs towards the general organization of the course.

6. The lectures must be advertised in the lecture course programme as EMBO Lectures.

EMBO Plenary Lectures

Eligibility: Only EMBO Members can be supported. A list can be found here.

Maximum funding: 1000 and 2000 euro (for overseas speakers)

The application process is handled via the online application system.

EMBO Young Investigator Lectures

Eligibility: Only current EMBO Young Investigators are eligible. A list can be found here.

Maximum funding: 800 and 1200 euro (for overseas speakers)

EMBO Science & Society Lectures

Eligibility: The lecturer must hold a presentation on 'Science & Society' issues.

Maximum funding: 1000 and 2000 euro (for overseas speakers)

EMBO Women in Science Lectures

EMBO Women in Science offers course organizers the opportunity to include a talk from a scientist to address issues related to women in science.

Eligibility: The lecturer must hold a presentation on 'Women in Science' issues.

Maximum funding: 800 and 1200 euro (for overseas speakers)

FEBS Youth Travel Fellowships (YTF)

Joint courses are also eligible to receive FEBS Youth Travel Fellowships (YTF), covering attendance of up to 30 students/postdoctoral students based on FEBS YTF guidelines. Further information is available on the FEBS website.
